You are no stranger to idea that our minds work much like that of a computer: working, processing, storing information...but can technology improve, strengthen, or stimulate certain cognitive functions in children?
Cognitive processes are highly involved with things like memory and attention. Many children suffer from forms of attention disorders that cause them to struggle academically and even socially. Being a young child trying to learn and live with an attention disorder such as ADD or ADHD can be difficult and emotionally distracting. The term "brain training" has become popular in the last few years, describing the process of challenging your mind to strengthen your cognitive abilities, typically with technological devices. Paul Gilbert with ADDitude Strategies and Support for ADHD and LD published an article about a young boy named Ben who lives with ADHD and how technological computer brain training increased his ability to focus, which in turn increased Ben's self esteem. The article further discussed the neurological breakdown of attention and memory as well as interactive metronome techniques. To read the full article, click here.
