Transgender is term that as adults we have become familiar with, but how is it that there are so many children who are identifying as transgender today?
Dr. Margaret Nicholas explains in her Tedx Talk "Breaking the Gender Binary: Transgender Youth Explosion", that the answer is much more simple that we think. Dr. Nicholas points out that twenty years ago, the term transgender only applied to adults but now is applied to children as young as two years old. Her explanation is the vast and dramatic change in culture over the last couple of decades. Things like stereotyping, social expectations and the use of technology and the media have influenced this change in culture and evidently the way our youth identify with their gender. While there are many other factors that contribute to a child identify as transgender, we must accept that today, the term transgender is not just for adults. I encourage you to watch the full video below for more information on transgender children.
