Does the media externalize a child's sense of self identity?
A child's self identity is the way in which they see themselves and how they feel they belong in the world. Psychology Today published an article that was actually an excerpt from Dr. Jim Taylor's book "Raising Generation Tech" that discussed how technology and the media are leading children to externalize their self identity. He explains that children are now finding themselves driven by external and social factors, rather than be driven internally by their own individual thoughts and knowledge. Dr. Taylor goes on to discuss how this externalization can be harmful to a child's sense of identity. Children are more vulnerable than any of us to the media and the pressures it projects, so how can we motivate children to look to themselves instead of media for self identity? Dr. Taylor's book, "Raising Generation Tech" can be a powerful and education tool you can use to answer this question. To read the full article on Psychology Today, click here.
